Matthew Archer-Beck
Staff Attorney at U.S. Court of Appeals for District of Columbia Circuit
Matthew Archer-Beck is a staff attorney with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. He was previously a litigation associate at Sidley Austin LLP, where he was part of the Religious Institutions Practice Group. He has authored briefs for parties and amici before the U.S. Supreme Court and many federal appeals courts, including the Fourth, Sixth, Ninth, and D.C. Circuits. Among the appellate matters he has handled, Mr. Archer-Beck has represented both religious institutions and prisoners in litigation under the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act. Mr. Archer-Beck was a law clerk to Judge Thomas L. Ambro of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit and Judge Edward Rafeedie of the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. He graduated magna cum laude from the Georgetown University Law Center, where he was an articles editor of the Georgetown Law Journal and was elected to the Order of the Coif. As a research assistant in law school, Mr. Archer-Beck helped research and draft chapters for the late Father Robert F. Drinan’s final book, Can God and Caesar Coexist?: Balancing Religious Freedom and International Law.
